Crafting the Perfect Pair: The Story Behind One of Our Most Challenging Custom Earrings

On the bench: one of our most challenging custom creations.

Some jewelry pieces come together with ease. Others require patience, intuition, and a level of precision that stretches every skill in our studio. This pair of custom earrings, created last month for a client from Singapore, belongs firmly in the second category — a design that looked elegant in drawings but became one of the most technically intricate projects we’ve ever completed.

The vision was clear: a graceful curve made entirely of baguette, princess and triangle diamonds, shaped to sit naturally and beautifully along the client’s ear. But what made this project uniquely demanding was that the earrings needed to perfectly follow her real ear shape, not a standard template. That meant every curve, angle, and gradient of stone had to be customized precisely to her ear profile, ensuring the final piece felt like it belonged uniquely to her.

We began with sketches. The first draft was too wide, too strong — visually impressive, but not the elegant silhouette she imagined. So we continued adjusting: softening the arc, narrowing the width, refining the angles until the curves hugged the ear just right. Through careful refinement guided by our design experience, we developed a version that felt both true to her vision and technically sound. With the design set, we continued the process.

That’s when the real work began.

Baguette diamonds vary subtly in length, width, thickness, and even weight. These tiny differences, often just 0.1 mm, determine whether a stone sits perfectly or cannot be set at all. For this design, every baguette had to match the CAD layout precisely. No stone could be even slightly oversized or undersized, and the taper and angle had to align with the design so the earrings flowed seamlessly from top to bottom. Triangle and princess diamonds added another layer of difficulty, requiring perfect symmetry between the left and right earrings.

We hand-selected every diamond one by one, examining, measuring, comparing, rejecting any stone that wasn’t an exact match. Only when we were completely certain did we begin crafting the settings.

We hand-picked each stone individually. Those that didn’t meet our strict size and quality requirements were left aside, ensuring only the perfect diamonds made it into the final piece.

Once production began, a new challenge arose: some of the diamonds were slightly too large to fit their settings. Baguettes cannot be adjusted, shaved, or forced — doing so risks cracking. So we paused and began sourcing a new round of stones in even more exact measurements, prioritizing perfection over speed.

With timing tight, our client planned a one-day visit from Singapore to our workshop to try the earrings before completion. Although the stones weren’t set yet, the structure was ready for fitting. When she placed the earrings against her ears, the curve aligned perfectly — elegant, natural, exactly as imagined through weeks of sketches and adjustments. It was a rewarding moment, both for her and for us.

There was one more critical detail to address. Because of the unique shape and length of the earrings, we needed to ensure they sat securely on her ear without tilting or risk of falling. Standard earring backs were not enough. So our craftsmen designed and created a custom, reinforced butterfly stud, engineered specifically for her piece. It offers stronger grip and stability, holding the earrings in place comfortably and safely, a small detail, but one that elevates both the functionality and longevity of the design. (As shown in the photo, this special butterfly was crafted alongside the earrings.)

We designed a special butterfly backing to ensure the earrings remain perfectly positioned and fully secure during wear — a small detail that makes a big difference.

She was wonderfully understanding about the remaining work. After seeing how well the earrings fit, she agreed that taking extra time to complete the diamond setting and plating was the right decision. Perfection shouldn’t be rushed, and we deeply appreciated her trust.

We are now completing the final stage: securing every diamond, perfecting the setting, polishing, finishing, and preparing the earrings for a premium courier delivery to Singapore.

This project reminded us why we love custom jewelry. It isn’t only about making something beautiful, it’s about problem solving, listening, refining, adapting, and ultimately creating a piece that exists for one person and one person only.

And this pair of earrings is one we’ll always remember.
