The Story of Komorebi: Sunlight, Sanctuary, and the Art of Light

Inspired by the source. The starting point for Komorebi (木漏れ日) wasn’t a sketch. It was a quiet afternoon under the trees in Japan with family. We looked at the way sunlight filters through the canopy, an interplay of shadow, light, and warmth.

Those organic light patterns became the blueprint for the collection. Open spaces in the gold let natural light pass right through, bringing every piece to life from within.

In 2023, my family and I spent three unforgettable months living in Okinawa. Away from the rush of daily routine, our days revolved around the gentle rhythms of nature, where deep forests melt into the Kerama Blue ocean, and time seems to move a little slower.

My children were just two and four years old at the time. Watching them explore the outdoors, barefoot and curious, made me see the world through a simpler, clearer lens.

One afternoon, while resting with my family beneath the canopy of trees, I looked up. The sun was passing through the leaves overhead, casting soft, dancing patterns of light onto the ground and onto my children’s faces. It was a moment of complete peace, quiet, transient, and profoundly beautiful.

That was the day I first learned the Japanese word Komorebi (木漏れ日).

the foundation for The Komorebi Collection.

SOLID GOLD, ORGANIC SHADOWS

There is no direct single word translation for Komorebi in English or Chinese. It describes a very specific, poetic phenomenon: the light that filters through the leaves of trees. It is a word that captures a fleeting moment of natural harmony, a interplay between shadow and warmth, leaf and sky.

In traditional jewelry making, we design settings to let light pass through a gemstone to maximize its brilliance. But Komorebi inspired a different architectural question: What if the gold structure itself could mimic the forest canopy, guiding and shaping the light as it passes through?

Sculpting Komorebi into 14K Gold

We sculpted solid 14K gold with open, ribbed godron channels, creating structural grooves that allow natural sunlight to filter through the setting. When light hits the ring, it doesn't just illuminate the deep purple amethyst or the vibrant green emerald halo; it casts soft, geometric shadows onto your skin, mirroring the sunlight filtering through forest leaves.

This collection is not just about precious stones or gold weight. It is a tangible memory of family, nature, and quiet luxury, crafted to remind you to slow down and find beauty in the fleeting light of everyday life.

Sunlight in Motion

When sunlight filters through the canopy, it isn't static, it bends, casts soft shadows, and warms everything it touches. We wanted to bring that exact movement into gold, crafting open spaces that allow natural light to pass right through the ring and dance across your skin.

COLOR & LIGHT

In nature, light creates unexpected magic. Just like how sunlight brings out the subtle, rich tones hidden in the forest, natural light passing through open gold channels turns distinct hues into poetry. Vibrant green emeralds and deep purple amethysts, colors you might not normally pair, come together under natural light in perfect, effortless harmony.
